Never worked in a remote locality before and yet keen to go miles away lured by the dollars and the great opportunities within mining sector?
Here is a basic reality check-list
1) FIFO (fly in and fly out) may mean 1-3 days of travel to reach work and then same amount of time on way home. You may have to also catch a number of planes and some may be very tiny! Need to factor the lost hours and the flying in the mix. There may be also a financial cost involved if you live in a regional area and need to get further transport to get home. Some mines will only fund you to the nearest Capital city.
2) Your quarters may be on rotation and therefore shared with others when you leave: you dont get to have somewhere to call “your own”
3) No friends and family, it can be lonely, except for the curious Goanna for company, you may feel quite alone.
4) Often camps are “dry” that means alcohol-free. There will be regular drug and alcohol tests.
5) Recreational activities can be mininal dependant on the type of mine and the staff numbers- The internet connections may be poor also
If this still sounds like a plan and you still are eager to go… make sure you research the company and the mine location thoroughly.
Apply for as many suitable roles as possible and use the adage “buyer beware”…
